New Year's Eve in China meant nothing was open.
Eliza and I tried to see a few of the temples with a man we met at the hostel named Justin and Eliza's friend Ian from Canada but alas nothing was open. Our first try was the Lama temple - closed, and then the Olympic Park - closed. We were lucky to find a restaurant near our hostel to eat a late lunch but then we went back to the hostel for dinner where a free meal was provided to us by the hostel staff. We spent most of our evening watching the many specials that were aired for the New Year celebration. Unfortunately Eliza and I did not make it to midnight but we were awoken by the fireworks that went off around our hostel - I went out to the washroom and saw that there was not much of a show since most fireworks here in China are just noise makers that sound like large cannons going off right next to you. These fireworks have continued for the past few days off an on in Beijing.
Not many pictures from the day but here you go.

In China they burn fake money to represent a wish for wealth and prosperity, this bonfire went on for a few minutes with the man adding more gold paper every now and then. |
